Merthyr Tydfil
council has anounced that work to make former coal tips safe will get underway
in the coming months. The council has received a Welsh Government grant to work
on both council owned and privately owned coal tips. Design work is currently
being done. The work required varies from capping mine shafts to drainage work,
and re-directing streams.
Monitoring devices
will be installed to check for any movement. There will be work to line
the watercourses to prevent further erosion of the tips. Vegetation will
be removed from old stone channels.
Work is set to start soon to cap a mine shaft at Gethin Pit, which is owned
by the council. The Cwm Pit which is privately owned will see the continuation
of works from last year to re-direct watercourses away from the tip. |
